How Bupa drives alignment across the three lines of defense
In our Spotlight on Success series, Jeremy Eagles (Group Chief Audit Officer) shares how Bupa uses AuditBoard to connect and integrate various systems and processes across their organization, driving alignment and collaboration across the three lines of defense. Bupa, an international healthcare company headquartered in the United Kingdom, provides diverse services to individuals and businesses, from health insurance and dental services to care homes.
Hear how Bupa’s internal audit team switched from a former global audit management system to AuditBoard’s connected risk platform, enabling them to integrate more technologies such as AI and analytics, as well as:
- Successfully connect different approaches, technologies, and processes across the three lines of defense in a central ecosystem.
- Improve collaboration by accelerating information and insights sharing across functions.
- Drive improved overall business alignment with Bupa’s strategic objectives.

Tell us a little about Bupa, and some of the challenges you faced in your previous manual audit environment.
Jeremy Eagles (Group Chief Audit Officer): "We had a global audit management system, which was helpful, but it was somewhat limited as it related to workflow, supporting stakeholder engagement, and providing us the opportunity to integrate more technologies – be it analytics, AI, etcetera."
How has AuditBoard improved your process?
Jeremy Eagles (Group Chief Audit Officer): "At Bupa we have a three lines of defense model. As a group, we have a very clear and connected group strategy and approach, but we have local market implementation. What does matter is that the different approaches and the different technologies and systems that we use can connect in a way that we can share information and insights and bring that together. It’s in that ecosystem that AuditBoard fits. It’s particularly helpful in the way that it enables us to not just use information but share information and integrate and connect with other systems and processes in the organization.
It’s become the digital frontdoor for the assurance services that our stakeholders receive, and that’s probably the biggest change in not just how we use our core systems – but how what we do shows up to our internal customers.
AuditBoard is [also] an important enabler for us to align with Bupa’s broader strategic objectives. In particular, it really helps us to work through an assessment of and determine the things that really matter. And, in turn, because the way in which we work more closely with the business – as a result of their engagement in the system and our processes — it really helps them to better understand what really matters and to focus on that in turn."
